The cemetery, located on the trails of English Camp National Historic Park, is a memorial to seven Royal Marines who died on the island in the 1860s. Four soldiers drown, but the cause of death for the remaining three is unknown. This peaceful cemetery on the south slope of 650-foot Young Hill is just part of the vast history surrounding the famed Pig War on San Juan Island.
Above the graves stand gnarled Garry Oaks that surround and shade the cemetery. Part of an ongoing restoration project, these mighty trees are making a comeback thanks to efforts (including prescribed burns) by the National Park Service.
