As Maya Angelou says, “No one comes from the earth like grass. We come like trees. We all have roots.” Come to the San Juan Islands for a chance to plant some new roots this April during National Volunteer Month.
Someone once said, “When we realize heart and earth are made with the same letters, it all starts to make sense.” In the San Juan Islands, guests can experience the true heart of Earth Month this April with cleanups, workshops, film screenings, and more.
Orca Month is a time to celebrate the presence of the Southern Resident orcas off our coast, and inspire action to address the many threats facing them. Celebrations will be hosted throughout British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington. For the little ones, fun and learning combine at The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, the first museum on the West Coast dedicated to the stewardship of whales.

Earlier this year, as part of our diversity and inclusion initiatives, the San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau partnered with the nonprofit Disabled Hikers (www.disabledhikers.com) to conduct a trail assessment of the popular outdoor spaces on San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez Islands. The Disabled Hiker’s Guide to the San Juan Islands is now available on our website (www.visitsanjuans.com/accessible-san-juans-hiking-guide) and highlights available amenities, parking, and any trail features that could potentially be hazardous for users with mobility challenges.

Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard. If you’ve been curious about how the San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau approaches destination marketing and management, here’s your chance to ask. Coming later this February and March, the Visitors Bureau will host three ‘Tourism Talk’ meetings via Zoom for residents to get to know the staff and board, learn more about what we do, and ask questions, make suggestions, and give constructive feedback.

FRIDAY HARBOR, WA… “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” -Martin Luther King, Jr. When we say “History Lives Here,” it is to bring attention to our island community’s often somewhat hidden, or at least not broadly remembered, rich local history. In typical years we celebrate with guided walking tours, history talks, displays and other events that bring the history of the islands to life. This year, however, we are adapting the way we tell our story to reflect social distancing made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic.
